In Essen, an apartment was stormed by a special task force on Jan. 24. The reason was a call that a man with a gun had allegedly threatened children during their break in the schoolyard. The children's parents alerted the police. The special operations squad deployed because of the perceived danger to the officers. The commando stormed the apartment ignited stun grenades, pulled a young man out of bed and tied him on the floor and threatened im with an assault rifle.
The deployed officers stormed the fake apartment and captured a completely uninvolved person. The young man, a student filed a complaint, suffers since the incident from psychological problems that make him unable to work. The officer in charge came to the young man a few days later with a letter from the police apologizing and that he personally wanted to apologize for the "circumstances" with a 50€ Amazon voucher. The man rejected this of course and let clarify over his lawyer that this is incomprehensible.
In the aftermath, the police complained in the social media that this "gesture of compensation" was seen by many readers of the local newspaper as a clumsy attempt at bribery. This approach is not uncommon when even the cops realize that they have gone too far and know that they will not get away with their behavior.
