In the following we want to give a short brief on an attack against a construction site of the US-company MR1 Construction on the Philippines, carried out by suspected combatants of the New People´s Army.(NPA).
On June 24, at around 9 p.m. a construction site in Lanuza town, Surigao del Sur were attacked by around 15-20 armed combatants. While one part of the combatants asked the workers to stop work, and then set fire to or otherwise destroyed materials and construction machinery, the other part opened gunfire on the approaching police forces and engaged them in a 20-30 minutes lasting encounter, troops of the 36th Infantry Battalion of the Army also reinforced the police personnel during the gun battle. Nevertheless, the combatants were able to retreat without apparent any losses, using a barrage of fire.
Due the action on watchman of MR1 Construction Company, which were trying to defend the construction material, were shot, two further were wounded. After the action, the reaction launched a clearing operation in the area, without any success. According to information of the police authorities, the reaction were only able to recover one assault rifle.
