PR: Students create study group in honour of Alípio de Freitas

The Alexandre Vannucchi Leme Academic Centre (CAAVL) of the Philosophy programme of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUC/PR) has created a study group in honour of the hero priest of the Brazilian people, Alípio de Freitas.

In a document posted on social media, the students point out the need to share a little about who Alípio de Freitas was and his importance in the history of the Brazilian people.

Here is an excerpt from the document prepared by the students:

"(...) The Alípio de Freitas Study Group - GEAF aims to develop topical issues and political studies based mainly on the Democrat newspaper, on whose editorial board Alípio de Freitas sat during his lifetime. The study group bears the name of the priest Alípio de Freitas, ordained in 1952, who was born in Portugal but was in Maranhão, where he became known for his great firmness with his faith and strength!"

Father, history professor at the University of São Luís, member of the editorial board of the newspaper A Nova Democracia and, above all, a great revolutionary who founded the peasant unions in the 1960s together with Francisco Julião Arruda de Paula!

During the fascist military coup he began to work for the people in secret, and in the 1970s he was arrested by the military and spent almost 10 years in prison, where he resisted the most brutal tortures but always maintained the firmness of his ideological strength, thus defeating his torturers.

Given the humanist vision that the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná and the Historical Philosophy Course pursue, it is only fair to honour this man who was an example of strength and faith throughout his life! It is with great joy and satisfaction that the CAAVL presents the study group, with a longing exclamation!

COMRADE ALÍPIO DE FREITAS! PREACH IN THE FIGHT!" (sic)
