The following is a (unofficial) translation of an interview published in the 83rd issue of the newspaper El Pueblo in August 2019 with the Chilean music, dance and theater ensemble “La Ventolera” [Eng.: “The gust of wind”]. It has a particular focus on the class principles and democratic values within culture.

On July 31, residents of the Complexo da Maré in Rio de Janeiro's North Zone, lived another day of terror and fear at the hands of the Witzel government's repressive troops. Early on, agents from BOPE (Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais), SHOCK and the 22nd battalion stormed several favelas in the compound, firing at random from armored vehicles and helicopters. Under a rain of heavy caliber shots, locals reported on social networks the moments of panic they experienced during the day.

The comrades in Mexico published a Video with impressions of Guelaguetza (from the zapoteco del Istmo, its correct denomination is guendalizaa, which means "fraternity, brotherhood". Its origin dates from the celebration to the goddess Centéotl, goddess of corn, and was carried out since before the Spanish conquest, but also in the interest to unify the original peoples around the corn cycle, which is accompanied by the cycle of The rain.), a big cultural annual event in Oaxaca. The background to these impressions is the insurrection against the comercialization of this event in 2006, which had as a result two Guelaguetza. On one side, the official and government version (commercial and prostitute) which is promoted by the state government in collusion with the various factions of the local bourgeoisie and the financial oligarchy. This could not take place in 2006, where the people boycotted it alltogether.

On this weekend, this first Convention will take place in Lima. There the defense of SUTEP will be discussed, since a small group in service of the big bourgeois and landowners try to destroy it, while ignoring the statutes of SUTEP. They betrayed the teachers in the middle of the 2017 strike.

This group appears as „SUTE Provincial de Barranca“, with several persons seen on this image: Reinaldo Castillo (Patria Roja) on the banner, and Pacheco, Chang Escalante (Movadef), Victoriano Escudero (Movadef) amonst others.

It was published yesterday and is a poem of Guto Gushek.

which brings a new sunshine behind the mountains;
the death of large and robust trees,
whose sap will become root
of a radiant and bright future! -"

In the late afternoon of the 27th of July, a large demonstration took place in the Pimentas neighborhood, on the outskirts of Guarulhos. It took place during the National Meeting of Pedagogy Students (Encontro Nacional de Estudantes de Pedagogia – ENEPe), as a way of demonstrating the combativeness of the event and the dissatisfaction of all present against the attacks on workers, peasants, students and youth by the old Brazilian state.

The students gathered at the entrance to the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and marched through the streets, chanting slogans, playing drums and raising flags. Among the movements present were the National Pedagogy Student Executive (Executiva Nacional de Estudantes de Pedagogia – ExNEPe), the Revolutionary People's Student Movement (Movimento Estudantil Popular Revolucionário – MEPR), the Red Unit - Revolutionary Youth League (Unidade Vermelha – Liga da Juventude Revolucionária – UV-LJR), People's Dawn (Alvorada do Povo – AP), the Fagulha Movement and Popular Brigades.

From the 16th until the 19th of July a nation-wide strike took place in Ecuador for five days in a row. The strike, which was called out by multiple organizations among them workers unions and indigenous and peasant organizations, was aimed against the politics of current president Lenin Moreno. Ecuador is going through an economic, political and social crisis and the people of Ecuador where having no more of it.

This crisis is mostly being caused by US-imperialism, which is imposing a series of reforms in Ecuador through the IMF and the World Bank. The effects of these reforms, such as the mass firing of workers from the health sector, the budget cuts in the health and education sectors and the rise of fuel and electricity prices are felt throughout Ecuadorian society.

Increasing in magnitude and strength, protests against the planned project to open up a new copper mine in the region of Arequipa, Peru, intensified significantly the last days. Following earlier protests, such as the actions from the 15th of July, now clashes with the police have intensified, as protesters again occupied major traffic arteries in the area, already causing supply shortage.

According to bourgeoisie reactionary press, the situation in the region of  Arequipa continues to be tense also in the 8th day of indefinite strike. Due to protesters having blocked the most important highways and connecting streets, since Monday gas stations, for example, face the situation of running out of supply, as protesters have successfully managed to block of all roads for some days.

The protest is directed against the so-called “Tía María” mining project planned by the US-capital backed Southern Copper Corporation (SCC) some years ago and it is not for the first time, that the struggle of the people to prevent it has taken sharp forms: As the peasants and people of the region are aware, how the proposed copper-mine will harm the basis for their livelihoods through pollution, seizure of lands, etc. they do not relent, although Police already before brutally tried to subdue to protest. Against the most recent attacks by the police to disperse the just protest of the people of Arequipa protesters remain combative and organized, mounting effective resistance against them and wounding for policemen in latest confrontations.
